My Experience

I grew up in a small town just outside of Philadelphia, surrounded by my large Italian- American family.  Cooking and enjoying food were at the heart of every day and especially every holiday.  I have been cooking since I was 12 years old and peering over the shoulder of my mother and grandmother since I was much much younger.  From an early age I learned that food was life-giving and thus it has always been at the heart of every conversation and every event, no matter how minor.  Over the years I have built on the technique and the instinct that I had as a child and branched off in directions that even my family are surprised by!  It is only in the last year that I have made the decision to share what I know and love about food with others.

For the last year I have been teaching cooking classes in the Richmond area.  I've planned and taught courses that explore a variety of cuisines including Tuscan, Sicilian, basic Italian, Thai, Spanish, Middle Eastern, Mexican, and vegetarian.   These classes have been very well received. Many students come back again and again not only because they are trying to learn how to cook but because they genuinely enjoy the experience of cooking with other people and sharing food around a table.  In September of 2006 Talk of the Table will officially be one year old and I am very proud of all the cooking and eating we've accomplished in that year!

I don't have a fancy degree from a posh cooking school or experience working under a cordon bleu chef.  I  just have loads of real experience in my own kitchen.  I am a fearless, passionate cook who isn't afraid to try new foods or techniques with an ability to connect with people.  These credentials have served me well so far!  Come along and see for yourself.

My Philosophy

I have lived in England with my husband David for the last three years and it has taken some adjustment.  One of the things I've had to get used to is eating in restaurants less.  Restaurants in London are expensive and often the prices do not reflect the quality of the food or the atmosphere.  As a result I have turned my focus onto entertaining and creating moments in my home that warm the walls even more than the brightly-coloured paint.  My mother has entertained guests all her life and by watching her I have learned what food is capable of.  Food can loosen up the stiff, unpleasant cousin that your wife assures you is only staying for the weekend.  It can even produce sheer delight!  I have never come to the table with a paella dish of steaming seafood without spontaneous applause, laughter and eyes filled with expectation!  Whatever way you look at it, food has powers and everyone deserves to have a part in it!
